Degree Seeking Students

International students have different options to study at the Technische Hochschule Lübeck: either within a full time bachelor or master degree program or as part of an exchange program.

While most of the degree programs are primarily taught in German, we also offer international programs taught exclusively in English.

Hint for International Students from outside the EU

Please keep in mind that prior to your departure / entry into Germany you most likely have to apply for a visa for study purposes at the German Embassy of your home country after you received the official admission of the Technische Hochschule Lübeck. Due to the visa application process, we strongly recommend to apply at TH Lübeck as soon as the application is open (winter term: May 1st, summer term: November 1st, exception: Biomedical Engineering, M.Sc., see above).

Bachelor Programs: Secondary School Leaving Certificate

International applicants seeking admission to an undergraduate course of study at the Technische Hochschule Lübeck can be admitted only if their university entrance qualifications are equivalent to the German higher education entrance qualifications (e. g. Allg. Hochschulreife, Fachhochschulreife). An applicant's eligibility for admission is normally determined on the basis of the secondary school leaving certificate (Maturität/ Baccalaureate/ high school diploma, etc.) For some countries of origin, you are also required to have passed a university entrance exam and/or provide evidence of any time you have already spent at university.

It is only possible to verify equivalence at the Technische Hochschule Lübeck as part of the application procedure. We recognize foreign university entrance qualifications on the basis of the credential evaluation standards issued by Germany's Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (Kultusministerkonferenz), see Anabin database.

Master Programs: The Certificate of Graduation

Admission to graduate studies (Master level) requires a first academic degree. The degree certificate (certificate of graduation, examination certificate) needs to be submitted with the application. Please note: Application is not possible without the final degree certificates.

Admission to the selection process is usually restricted to applicants holding a degree in a related field of studies. Further information can be found either on the pages of the admission office (programs in German) or the pages of Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Water Engineering, respectively.

    Master Programs: English Language Skills

The Master programs Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Water Engineering are entirely taught in English. Therefore, international applicants must have the proof of good English knowledge appreciated by official certificates.

Please note that TH Lübeck does not offer preparatory German language courses nor its own DSH examination. The necessary language skills need to be demonstrated by inclusion of a DSH certificate (DSH is the German language examination for university admission) or an equivalent certificate with the application:

    • DSH
German language examination for university admission, at least overall level 2
    • TestDaF
Test German as a Foreign Language, level 4 (all parts of the test)
    • Goethe Certificate C2
Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom  (C1, B2, B1 are not sufficient for admission)
    • Feststellungsprüfung des Studienkollegs
The German language exam has to be passed with at least grade 4 ("ausreichend")

Other accepted certificates are listed in the Rahmenordnung über Deutsche Sprachprüfungen für das Studium an deutschen Hochschulen.

    IMPORTANT NOTE

At the time of the application you can present a German certification Level B2/C1, for example, TestDaF (score 3,4,4,3 or 3,4,4,5), Goethe-Zertifikat C1 or telc C1 (DSH 1 is not enough) and an application for a German exam to the above-mentioned proof of language, then please submit the certificate and the registration with your application documents.

All applicants will be informed about either their acceptance or rejection.

All applicants for programs with unrestricted admission who meet the admission requirements are granted a place on the course. They will receive a letter from the university inviting them to register. Applicants who do not meet the admission requirements will also be notified in writing.

The programs with restricted admission are subject to a selection procedure. The selected applicants will be informed by the university in writing (by a 'letter of acceptance'). This letter of acceptance will ask them to formally accept the place offered to them by a certain deadline, to send any documents that may still be missing, and to register.

Unsuccessful applicants will also be notified in writing. The letter of rejection informs them about how well they did in the selection procedure and what place they were given in the ranking list made during the selection procedure. The rejection automatically puts them on a waiting list, the so called “Nachrückverfahren”. Applicants on the waiting list are given any places on the course that subsequently become vacant. Places may become vacant due to selected applicants failing to accept the place they were offered or deciding to reject their selection. The waiting list normally remains active until all of the places on the course have been taken, but only until the close of registration at the latest.
