Funding and grants
An academic stay abroad may be subject to additional costs (e.g. travel, visas and accommodation etc.). There a several funding opportunities for TH Lübeck students and staff members to study, work, teach or do a trainig abroad.
- Übersicht
The International Office awards grants for student mobilities for studies at TH Lübeck's Erasmus+ partner universities and for mobilities for traineeships in Europe within the framework of the EU mobility program Erasmus+. Furthermore, it administers the PROMOS-Program financed by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) with funding provided by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The student association IAESTE organizes paid internships worldwide. In addition, students can apply for a scholarship for a mobility to China.
German TH Lübeck students can also apply for the scholarship program of the Zhejiang Province with the Federal state of Schleswig-Holstein. Students can study in English for one semester at one the universities in the Zhejiang Province and receive a tuition waiver and free accommodation. There are several other funding programs offered by the DAAD, several foundations and organizations. An overview of the most relevant scholarships is provided below.
Funding opportunities administered by TH Lübeck
Students can apply for the following scholarship programs that are administered by the International Office at TH Lübeck:
- Study and traineeship within the Erasmus+-Programm of the European Union
- Travel allowance in the PROMOS-Program
- Shanghai-Scholarship (China)
- Paid internship abroad organized by the IAESTE LC Lübeck
- MSOE-Double-Degree-Programm (USA)
- Tuition waiver for mobility for studies at most international partner universities
DAAD: HAW.International
The DAAD supports German students at universities of applied sciences during their stay abroad within the HAW.International scholarship program. Students in Bachelor and Master degree programs can apply for funding for mobilities for studies and traineeship abroad. The funding period depends on the type of mobility. The scholarship covers:
- Monthly payments depending on country of destination,
- Payments towards health, accident and personal liability insurance cover,
- Travel alowance depending on the country of destination,
- Contribution to tuition fees at the receiving organization.
Under certain conditions, family benefits can be granted for accompanying spouses or partners and children. A combination of funding in the Erasmus+ or Promos program and the HAW.International scholarship program for the same mobility is excluded.

Depending on the study program and country of destination, there are additonal scholarship programs provided:

Auslands-BAföG
German students can apply for funding according to the BAföG-Auslandszuschlagsverordnung (BAFöG = Federal Training Assistance Act) for mobilities for studies and internships abroad. The funding can include:
- Monthly allowance for mobilities outside the EU
- Contribution to tuition fees at the receiving university (up to 4.600 Euro per year)
- Travel allowance
- Payment towards health insurance cover.
The payments according to BAföG-Auslandszuschlagsverordnung are made as subsidy and count as an additional semester to the regular Inlands-BAföG funding period.
Note: The funding rates for Auslands-BAföG can mean that someone who is not entitled for Inlands-BAFöG due to the level of the parents' income, can nevertheless receive Auslands-BAFöG funding. We therefore recommend to submit an application.
Important: Applications for Auslands-BAFöG shall be submitted at least 6 months before the start of the mobility period at the respective Studentenwerk.
Educational loan
Another possibility to finance a mobility period abroad are educational loans. The Federal Government set up the Training loan programme in order to allow students in advanced stages to complete their training or studies. It closely co-operates with KfW Bankengruppe, who disburses the loan and manages the regular repayment.
- Erasmus+
Erasmus+ is the EU Program in the fields of education, training, youth and sport for the period 2021-2027. The general objective of the Program is to support, through lifelong learning, the educational, professional and
personal development of people in education, training, youth and sport, in Europe and beyond, thereby contributing to
sustainable growth, quality jobs and social cohesion, to driving innovation, and to strengthening European identity and
active citizenship. Since 1987, the European Commission supports and facilitates the transnational and international mobility of university students and staff. Detailed information on the program is available on the websites of the European Commission.Technische Hochschule Lübeck has been awarded the Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE) based on its Erasmus Policy Statement (EPS). This allows the participation in the Erasmus+ program. Our Erasmus Code is D LUBECK03.
TH Lübeck students can study at one of TH Lübeck's Erasmus+ partner universities or gain practical experiences during a traineeship in one of the program countries. Students may participate in mobility periods totalling up to 12 months of physical
mobility maximum per each cycle of study (Bachelor, Master), independently of the number and type of mobility activities. An Erasmus individual support grant can be awarded. The Erasmus+ Charta for students informs about the students' rights and obligations.Erasmus+ program countries are the EU Member States, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Republic of North Macedonia, Republic of Turkey and Republic of Serbia.
- Scholarship benefits
Erasmus+ Funding covers the following benefits:
- Academic recognition of study achievements abroad,
- Tuition waiver at the Erasmus partner university (mobility for studies) or
- EU Traineeship agreement signed by TH Lübeck, the receiving organization and the student (mobility for traineeship),
- Organizational and administrative support before, during and after the mobility,
- Language support through online courses and placement tests,
- Financial Top-Ups for students with disabilities (Grad der Behinderung ab 20), students with chronic illness and students with child(ren), and
- Individual support grant as a contribution to the additional costs for travel and subsistence related to the period of study or traineeship abroad.
The monthly amount of the individual support grant is based on the country of destination. The program countries are divided into the three following groups according to their living costs (valid from the Winter semester 2019 on):
Mobility for studies
Group 1: DK, FI, IE, IS, LI, LU, NO, SE, UK* - 450 €
Group 2: AT, BE, CY, (DE), ES, FR, GR, IT, MT, NL, PT - 390 €
Group 3: BG, CZ, EE, HR, HU, LT, LV, PL, RO, SI, SK, TR, FYROM - 330 €Mobility for traineeship
Group 1: DK, FI, IE, IS, LI, LU NO, SE, UK* - 555 €
Group 2: AT, BE, CY, (DE), ES, FR, GR, IT, MT, NL, PT - 495 €
Group 3: BG, CZ, EE, HR, HU, LT, LV, PL, RO, SI, SK, TR, FYROM - 435 €The traineeship can last from 2 to 12 months.The funding period is limited to 5 months but can be extended under certain conditions.
* Mobility to the UK can be funded in the Erasmus+ Program until May 2023.
- Prerequisites
An existing inter-insitutional agreement between TH Lübeck and the host university is a prerequisite for an Erasmus+ student mobility for studies. Both universities must be a holder of a valid Erasmus Charter for Higher Education (ECHE). In case of student mobility for traineeships, an EU traineeship agreement has to be signed by TH Lübeck, the host institution and the student. EU institutions and other EU bodies including specialised agencies are not eligible as receiving organisations for student mobility for traineeships.
Eligable are all students enrolled at TH Lübeck in studies leading to a recognised degree. Student mobility for studies is possible from the 3rd semester on. Traineeships abroad can be started in the first year of studies and even after graduation. Recent graduates must be selected by TH Lübeck during their last year of study, and must carry out and
complete their traineeship abroad within one year of obtaining their graduation.Duration of the activity:
- Student mobilty for studies: 3 to 12 months
- Student mobility for traineeship: 2 to 12 months
- The same student may participate in mobility periods totalling up to 12 months of physical mobility maximum per each cycle of study, independently of the number and type of mobility activities.
After an Erasmus+ funded stay abroad, the grant holder are requested to submit a final report which will be made available for other students in the Lernraum.
- Application
To apply for an Erasmus+ funded student mobility, the student has to take these 3 steps:
Student Mobility for Studies
1. Select a partner university
2. Apply for an exchange place with the International Office, Deadline: 15 January and 1 September
Important: Late application can be accepted as long as funds are available and the deadlines at the respective partner university can still be met. Further information is available in the Lernraum.

3. Selection and Nomination
The International Office ranks all received applications according to the following selection criteria: Academic performance, motivation and language skills. The departments will be consulted if necessary. According to the ranking list, the students are selected for the available exchange places at the partner universites. The International Office informs the student about the decision and nominates the student at the partner university. The selection for placement at the partner university includes the selection for the Erasmus+ individual support grant.
4. Application at the partner university
After the nomination, the student has to submit the application documents at the partner university. Information is available from the partner university and the International Office.
Student Mobility for Traineeship

2. Apply for Erasmus+ funding at the International Office, Deadline: 1 month before the start of the traineeship

3. Selection
The International Office processes the application and grants the Erasmus+ individual support taking into account the available funds.
A list of former receiving organisations and reports by TH Lübeck students are available in the Lernraum.
- Mobility with partner countries
With the Erasmus+ program, TH Lübeck students have the opportunity to complete one or two semester at specific non-European partner universities and to receive a grant. This includes a monthly individual support grant plus a travel support based on the travel distance. There are no tuition fees at the partner university and ECTS credits earned abroad can be recognized at TH Lübeck. Erasmus+ funding can be requested for the following partner universities:
Jordan (for students in Engineernig and Business, Biomedical Engineering)
Ukraine (for students in the department of Architecture and Civil Engineering)

- Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture
- Lviv Polytechnic National University
- Poltava National Technical Yuri Kondratyuk University
The financial grant for student mobility for studies in partner countries has been determined by the EU Commission on a European level:
from Germay to the partner country: 700 € per month
from the partner country to Germany: 850 € per monthIn addition, the students receive a travel grant in the amont of 530 € for Jordan and 275 € for the Ukraine.
The minimum duration of 3 months has to be observed to receive the financial grant. TH Lübeck can fund student mobility up to 5 months, provided that sufficient funds are available. Students can find informationen on the application process under "Application".

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) finances the PROMOS program with funding provided by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).The Promos program supports mobilities worldwide. At TH Lübeck, the International Office awards PROMOS travel allowances.
- Scholarship benefits
An outward and return travel allowance depending on the country of destination is granted.
- Requirements
The PROMOS program supports financially short-term mobilities outside the Erasmus+ program from 6 weeks to a maximum of 6 months. The TH Lübeck sets three priorities:
- USA: Mobility for studies at the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) within the Double-Degree-Programs
- China: 3 to 6 month-long student mobility at the ECUST in Shanghai
- Mobility for studies and internship worldwide (outside the Erasmus+ program).

The application for a PROMOS-scholarship has to be submitted to the International Office before 15 February.

Technische Hochschule Lübeck highly evaluates the academic cooperation with China for more than 25 years. To encourage the bilateral exchange, TH Lübeck students can apply for a scholarhsip for a project semester at our partner university, the East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST) in Shanghai.
Are you a degree seeking student enrolled in the department of Applied Natural Sciences, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science or Mechanical Engineering and Business Administration and you are interested in doing a project semester for three or six months at the ECUST in Shanghai? Apply now for the Shanghai scholarship! It is possible to have the research project recognized as internship or to use the results for the Bachelor or Master thesis. Working language is English. A Chinese intensive language course can be attended in Shanghai if desired.

- Scholarship benefits
The Shanghai scholarship covers:
- Tuition Waiver in China
- Accommodation in international dormitories (Single Room with bathroom and Internet access)
- Monthly allowance in the amount of 1000 Yuan (this sum covers study and meals on campus)
- Support through the International Office and Student Buddies in China
Costs for visa, flights and insurances have to be covered by the student. We recommend to apply for a PROMOS-scholarship to cover travel costs.
Note: If you plan to have the ECUST project work be recognized as internship as part of your studies at TH Lübeck, please clarify beforehand with the departmental coordinator whether the project task at ECUST meets all requirements.

Eligable are students enrolled at TH Lübeck in studies leading to a recognised degree in one of these departments:

It is highly recommended to engange as a Chinabuddy for one semester before submitting the application to gain first experiences in dealing with the Chinese culture and way of living.

Applications have to be addressed to the Vice President for Research and International Relations, Prof. Frank Schwartze, including the supporting documents:
- Signed Scholarship form
- Meaningful Cover letter, addressing field-specific background information and the desired department at ECUST
- CV
- Transcript of Records
- Proof of English language skills (e.g. school leaving certificate)
- Letter of recommentation issued by a professor at TH Lübeck
- Additional relevant supporting documents, if applicable
Note: Before applying, an individual appointment with the China-Koordination is receommended to receive all necessary information which might not be available on the English-speaking ECUST website to choose the right department and study/ research project.
Please clarify in advance with the head of your study program or departmental coordinator whether your planned study/ research project at ECUST can be recognized as part of your studies at TH Lübeck.
The application documents have to be submitted digitally (PDF) in German and English to the China-Koordination.
For the winter semester 2021/22 the application deadline ends on 01.03.2021.
The Sino-German College of Technology at ECUST is responsible for the final selection of the scholarship candidates. TH Lübeck makes a pre-selection on the criteria academic performance and personal aptitude.

- IAESTE
The International Association for the Exchange of Students for Technical Experience (IAESTE) is an association of national committees representing academic, industrial and student interests. It serves 3500+ students, 3000 employers and 1000 academic institutions through career-focused professional traineeships abroad, social and intercultural reception programmes, international networking and other career and employer branding activities in more than 80 countries worldwide.
Internships are tailored to students in STEM fields (engineering, science, maths, IT etc.) but if the student's field of study is not one of those the student can still apply, as long as the internship requirements are met.
General process to apply for an IAESTE internship

- Get in contact with local Lübeck IAESTE committee (by Mail, Facebook or Instagram).
- Be accepted by the employer
- Start your internship
All IAESTE on-site internships are paid a cost of living allowance which as a minimum will cover accommodation, foods and local travel. Some remote internships may offer alternative arrangements and these will be stated in the internship information. For internships outside the EU, the student can apply for a travel allowance with the DAAD.
Applications have to be submitted to the local IAESTE committee between October and January. Detailed information on the application process and the required documents are available online and with the local IAESTE committee.
