Language Center
The THL Language Center provides a comprehensive program of application- and skills-oriented language study for students of all faculties. Most courses qualify as elective modules. ECTS credit points can be awarded in accordance with individual study programs. The course program is free of charge and open to students of the Universität zu Lübeck as well.

Details on our course program, schedules and general information can be found on our Lernraum site (THL moodle system). That is where you register for all language courses at the beginning of the semester.
Students of the Universität zu Lübeck or Musikhochschule Lübeck without Lernraum access are asked to contact the Language Center (sprachenzentrum(at)th-luebeck.de) for schedule, course registrations, examination registrations and further information.

English Foundation Course (A2-B1 / 4 SWS): This course aims at students whose English is not good enough yet to follow an English class for specific purposes. Four intensive teaching units per week are accompanied by guided intensive self-study in this specially setup foundation course. The learning objective is to reach level B1 upon completion of the course.
Technical English I (B1-B2 / 4 SWS): In this course you will acquire basic Technical English skills relevant for your engineering studies and your professional field. Competences trained in this course are e.g. process descriptions, product descriptions, operating instructions, presentation language and small talk in a professional context. The portfolio examination is skills-oriented and includes a presentation on a specific technical topic.
Technical English II (B2-C1 / 4 SWS): In this course you will improve your knowledge of Technical English. Competences are expanded and trained on an advanced level, e.g. communication and discussion skills. Additional practice focuses on writing professional and study-related texts.
Business English I (B2 / 4 SWS): This course is aimed at students of all study fields who want to improve their command of English particularly in a business context. The relevant Business English skills practiced are based on authentic materials (business texts) and case studies. Course topics are e.g. job applications, e-mails, meetings, presentations and small talk in a professional context. The portfolio examination is skills-oriented and includes a presentation on a specific business topic.
Business English II (B2-C1 / 4 SWS): This challenging course is aimed at students of all study fields and builds on previously acquired skills in English for specific purposes. Topics include career development, corporate activities, logistics & supply chain management, management in general, strategic marketing, investment and trade. With a strong focus on communicating effectively in business, we will concentrate on expression, fluency and accuracy in speaking and writing and on increasing your expressive power in the English language. This course is accompanied by e-learning elements.
English for International Certificates (B2-C1 / 2 SWS): This intensive course is aimed at students with a good command of English who intend to take an internationally recognized test certificate like TOEFL, IELTS or various Cambridge Certificates. The course provides you with a thorough, comprehensive preparation on B2/C1 level.
Scientific Writing (B2-C1 / 3 SWS): This course is aimed at students who are planning or have already started to write a paper that is relevant for their studies. You will learn how to organize and compose readable, well-structured scientific papers in English and will acquire the writing skills you need for your thesis or a study-related report. Specific topics are discussed in detail and directly applied, e.g. Introduction, Materials and Methods, Conclusion, Abstract.

German A1 (Beginner): On this level you will study the basics of German communication in the context of university and everyday life. Practicing the four skills Listening and Speaking, Reading and Writing you will constantly extend your vocabulary and adopt the basic grammar knowledge. You will learn about Germany, the Germans and
their culture. Level A1 is subdivided into the modules A1.1 und A1.2 (4 SWS each).

The four skills Listening and Speaking, Reading and Writing are trained systematically. Vocabulary and grammar skills are enhanced. Students will learn to interact and communicate in routine situations and deepen their knowledge of German culture and society. Level A2 is subdivided into the modules A2.1 und A2.2 (4 SWS each).

When practicing the four skills of Listening and Speaking, Reading and Writing you will learn how to express yourself appropriately in university settings and everyday situations. You will
also deepen your knowledge concerning German culture and society. Level B1 and B2 are subdivided into the modules B1.1 and B1.2 resp. B2.1 and B2.2 (4 SWS each).
Please refer to our Schedule to find out which course is offered in the current semester.German C1 (Proficiency): In this course for advanced learners you will extend your language skills and will be able to use the German language flexibly and effectively for professional and academic purposes The four skills of Listening and Speaking, Reading and Writing are trained systematically on the basis of complex general and academic
topics. The development of an advanced academic vocabulary is in the focus, combined with the acquisition of stylistically and grammatically demanding structures.
Level C1 is subdivided into the modules C1.1 and C1.2 (4 SWS each).
Please refer to our Schedule to find out which course is offered in the current semester.German language at university level: Academic Language and Scientific Work (C1-C2 / 4 SWS): This course is designed for international students participating in German Bachelor or Master programs who want to improve their study performance. You will train your scientific reading and writing skills, practice academic presentations and enhance your academic vocabulary. The course is supplemented by a voluntary tutorial that offers consulting and language support as needed.
