Welcome Weeks 2023
Congratulations for being accepted at TH Lübeck for summer semester 2023. We are as excited and curious as you are and look forward to meeting you very soon. To make your start easier, all new international students take part in a two-week introductory program: The THL WELCOME WEEKS (March 13 - 26)
During this time you will not only get to know the campus, but also Lübeck and its environs. You will receive important information for your studies, get to know your contact persons and take part in great events. Within your department or study program, you will get well connected, get help with your course planning and get to know the facilities. German language courses and intercultural trainings complement the program. Have fun and meet people from all over the world.
To make sure you don't miss anything, please plan to arrive at least 2 days before the Welcome Weeks start.
Please read this homepage carefully as it contains the schedule and further important information for the preparation of your stay in Lübeck.
In order to ensure a proper planning of your German language course, please read the instructions given at "German lessons" and carry out the placement test by February 10!
Participation in the Welcome Weeks is free of charge. Accommodation and meals are not included.

- German lessons
In order to ensure a proper planning of your German language course, please carry out the following placement test: https://einstufungstests.klett-sprachen.de/eks/DaF-A1-C1 by February 10.
Please enter YOUR name but OUR e-mail address incomings(at)th-luebeck.de on the second page of the test so we will receive your test results.If you face any trouble to understand the instructions on the first page, please don't worry and make us of an online translation tool. But for the sake of a genuine test result, we are asking you to take the test itself on your own without any assistance! If you have no previous knowledge at all, there is no need to take the test. Instead, please send a short message to the given e-mail address. Thank you!
If you would like to go ahead and learn more German during summer semester, your teacher will give an individual recommendation for a course level and guide you through the application process. Every semester we offer courses on various levels from A1.1 to B2.2 that cover 4 SWS and 5 ECTS.
With 4 lessons per day, German classes take place at various levels in small groups. The lessons help you in your studies and in everyday life. Whether for your studies, for orientation, shopping or making new friends.
- Introductory lecture: Welcome to THL – Academic Aspects
During this session, you will learn how to register for exams, how to access your schedule, where to find course related information and how to access your grades. All these information are essential for your stay at TH Lübeck - do not miss it!
In order to deepen the knowledge just learned, a practical exercise will take place after the lecture. Some senior students are going to supervise the exercise and give support. Please make sure to bring a laptop!
- Introductory lecture: Welcome to THL – Introduction to student life
What sport activities are offered to THL students? How do I use the Semesterticket? Where do I get lunch? What is the Intercultural Hub and where can I find it? How do I connect with the ESN? These and other questions will be answered during this session. We will cover all topics related to being a student at THL.
- Barbecue and Boardgames with senior students
The student committees of the THL invite all freshmen to a barbecue and game afternoon during the introduction week. You will experience a barbecue with student-friendly prices in a relaxed atmosphere. Don't worry, there will also be vegetarian and vegan food.
While eating and playing games you can make first contacts with German students and the student committees. You should not miss this.
- Guided City Tour (Lübeck)
Discover Lübeck in a guided city tour. Together with your fellow students, you will see Lübeck's famous landmarks, the medieval passages, the waterways around the old town and many more. You are going to learn many interesting facts and have a good time together.
Meeting point is at the Holstentor. Please wear comfortable shoes and bring a rain coat if necessary. The tour will be accompanied by senior students.
- Billard Club
Directly after the guided city tour, some senior students are going to meet you at the Billard Sport Casino which is rented exclusively for the participants of the Welcome Weeks. Enjoy a fun afternoon! Food and drinks have to be paid by yourself.
We have a number of senior students who accompany and support the new international students as international tutors. They are called "Intercultural Hub". They will take part in some of the events during the Welcome Weeks and will accompany the trips.

- Meeting at the departments
Who is who in the department? Where can you do what? Where do you have to be during the first week of lectures? Where do you receive individual counseling? All these questions and more will be answered during this meeting at your department. You will receive an academic overview of your department and all offices. You will learn more about course participating and how to register for exams. You will receive information how courses and lectures are organized in our department, where you find the module descriptions or course passwords. Furthermore, we will help you to organize your timetable based on your learning agreement. Of course, there is time for questions and recommendations. After this meetings, you should be ready to start lectures and coursework!

- Workshop 1: Intercultural Awareness
The workshop is intended to enable you improve your communication skills and intercultural competence, useful for day to day campus life. During the workshop, you are given the opportunity to develop your intercultural competence, a skills set which becomes ever more useful not only on campus but also for other professional engagements in the open job market.
The workshop dives into the comparison of different cultures. A special emphasis is laid on the empirical research done by communication experts such as Edward T. Hall and Geert Hofstede as we use their ideas of cultural dimensions to analyze and discuss so-called Critical Incidents in an intercultural context.
During the workshop, you will not only expand your theoretical knowledge but also experience intercultural communication „first hand“, thanks to the diversity of our participants, drawn from various countries across the globe!

The workshops are moderated by Nicola Graessner and Evans Gumbe. Nicola is a German national with requisite training and many years experience as an intercultural trainer, both in Germany and abroad. She is well travelled and has spent many years studying, living and working in various countries around the world.
Evans is a German national with an Afro-British background. He holds the requisite training in intercultural communication from Great Britain and brings with him a wealth of experience as an intercultural trainer, having studied, lived and worked in various countries around the world. He is a highly experienced trainer and consultant in intercultural communication, working with various target groups in both universities, research institutions and international companies. - Workshop 2: Communication at THL
Communication is the basis of our daily life, working in teams and international networking. The way we communicate differs depending on our family and educational background, peer groups, regional/social circumstances, and national rules and settings.
In this mini workshop we explore and experience how communication works in everyday German university life and which rules and settings influence international communication and teamwork. We reflect on our own cultural standards and compare different communication styles.Trainer: Nicola Graessner, Evans Gumbe

One highlight of the Welcome Weeks is the campus rally. In small groups, the participants conquer the campus, face tricky, fun and educational tasks and, in doing so, get to know the campus better. There is an award for the best team that will be presented at the official welcome ceremony.
- Welcome Ceremony
Save the best for last: As the crowning glory of an eventful and educational introductory phase, we enjoy the official Welcome Weremony. Representatives of the university board, the deaneries and student committees welcome you in a festive event, accompanied by music. The winning team of the campus rally will be announced in this event.
After the ceremony, you are invited to a nice get-together with a snack buffet, organized by senior students.
