Participation in the GamiFIN 2023 Conference in Finland

From April 18-21, 2023, the "7th Annual International GamiFIN Conference 2023" was held in Lapland, Finland. Our colleague Jessica Brandenburger presented the paper "A gamified career guidance platform with the potential to intrinsically motivate young people" at the conference.

GamiFIN 2023

GamiFIN is organized by the Gamification Group, led by Prof. Dr. Juho Hamari, and is a meeting place where results of the latest work on gamification, technology, media and digital culture for the future society are presented by researchers, industry representatives and experts.

As part of the BMBF-funded research project JOLanDA, we at the Institute for Interactive Systems (ISy), together with the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Hildesheim/Holzminden/Göttingen, have developed a digital platform that supports young people in their career choice decisions. The platform has a very playful approach to motivate especially the younger target group (12 years and older) to use it outside of school on a voluntary basis. The platform uses a novel interaction concept and various gamification elements.

So far, several field tests have taken place at German schools. The platform is continuously being developed with students and is currently still under construction: https://berufsorientierung-jolanda.de/.

In a study, we investigated whether the gamification elements used are perceived as intrinsically or extrinsically motivating and how useful they seem to be for the students. The paper shows which gamification and design elements can potentially intrinsically motivate young people on digital career guidance platforms.

The paper will be published in the conference proceedings in the next few days (open access):
