Welcome to the research laboratory of functional nanomaterials!

Nanostructured materials feature a rich spectrum of fascinating and extremely useful properties that cannot be found in bulk (macroscopic) materials. The reduction of the size of the elements to the range of 10-9 meter changes, among others, their electronic structure and spectral properties.

These effects have an extraordinary engineering potential in the area of renewable energy generation. In particular, in the fabrication of highly efficient thermoelectric and photovoltaic elements, the nanostructuring offers the possibility of deployment of sustainable and non-toxic materials.

The potential of organic materials has also been recognized in this area. Functional materials extracted from naturally grown maritime organisms allow the construction of cheap photovoltaic generators with a much smaller CO2 fabrication footprint.

The teaching and research program of Prof. Nadine Buczek at Technische Hochschule Lübeck - University of Applied Sciences revolves around the applications of these sophisticated and sustainable materials for designing optimized renewable energy generation systems:

  • Fabrication of prototypes of solar cell and thermoelectric generators
  • Photovoltaic characterization using solar simulators and long-term field measurements, in order to probe stability of the generators under real-life conditions.
  • Full thermoelectric characterization of bulk systems and nanostructures, in particular electric conductivity, Seebeck coefficient, and thermal conductivity using 3-ω method.

Computer based quantum simulations support the material and process design and guide the experiments. For this, a strong cooperation with the theoretical groups of HAW Hamburg and JKU Linz are maintained.
The laboratory is located on the beautiful campus of TH Lübeck in the landmark heritage solar house, one of the first built in Germany in the early eighties of the last century.
