Explained step-by-step
The standard procedure for applying for a place at TH Lübeck is to apply online via our application portal.
Further information on how to apply under special conditions (for example, with a foreign certificate of education, without a school entrance qualification, etc.) can be found below.
Procedure of the online application process
First you have to register in the application portal and go through the online application process. For the Bachelor's degree programs in Civil Engineering, Urban Planning, Business Administration and Industrial Engineering, prior registration at www.hochschulstart.de is also required.
Exception: In the Bachelor's program in Architecture, you must first take the aptitude test. Only after you have passed this can you apply online.
Please have your transcripts ready for the online application, as they must be uploaded to the application portal. In open-admission programs, you can apply for online enrollment immediately after submitting your application. Please note that only files in PDF, JPG or PNG format can be uploaded.
Further procedure
Bachelor's and Master's degree programs with restricted admission:
If more applications are received for a restricted-admission program than there are places available, a selection process will take place. After your application documents have been checked, you will be cleared for participation in the selection procedure (the application status changes to "valid").
Bachelor's degree programs with open admission:
After submitting the online application, immediate online enrollment is possible. After your enrollment documents have been checked, you will receive your study documents by mail.
Master's programs with open admission:
After your application documents have been checked, you will receive information about admission via the application portal.
You can check the current status of your application at any time on the application portal!
Admission Procedure
If there are more applications for a restricted-admission course than places available, a selection procedure will be carried out. There is no selection procedure for degree programs without admission restrictions.
In addition to general explanations concerning the selection procedure, we will provide you with an overview of the grades and waiting times for every restricted-admission program from the last two selection procedures. These may serve as a decision aid before applying for one of the degree programs.
- Overview
Possible admission restrictions are based on the number of available study places (and not on the grade point average - GPA)
After deducting the quota for non-EU foreigners and the quota for second-degree students, these study places are distributed as follows:
- approx. 80% according to the average grade of the university entrance qualification and
- approx. 20% according to the waiting period.
The waiting period is based on the number of semesters that have passed since the acquisition of the university entrance qualification.
The waiting period and the grade point average are considered separately. Offsetting one with the other (in whatever way) is not possible.
Applicants are only granted one study place even if they would have qualified for a place in both categories.
Vocational training and years of service are already taken into account when calculating the waiting period / ranking. These are not grounds for applications for hardship or compensation for disadvantages. The requirements for such applications are explained in detail under the above-mentioned link.
A number of master's degree programs have a minimum grade as admission requirement. This requirement has nothing to do with admission restrictions - it still applies even if the study program is listed without admission restrictions.
Currently, no bachelor's degree program at TH Lübeck comes with a minimum grade as admission requirement.

You should enclose your language certificate and the registration form with your application documents. A recognized language certificate with the required result must be available by the time of enrollment at the latest! - Without Abitur or school-based university entrance qualification
In Schleswig-Holstein, there are the following special university access options for people who do not have the school-based university entrance qualification, but rather a special professional qualification:
- Master craftsman's examination or similar advanced training
- Trial study
- University entrance examination
We have compiled details for you in the following sections.
Master craftsman's examination
A master craftsman's examination or similar advanced training (e.g. state-certified technician, business economist, certified business administrator) entitles the holder to study in all bachelor degree programs in accordance with Section 39 of the Higher Education Act, provided the courses comprise at least 400 teaching hours.
Please note: If the university entrance qualification does not show an average grade determined to one decimal place, a special certificate showing the average grade of the institution at which the degree was obtained must be submitted. Those who do not provide proof of an average grade will be placed behind the last application with an ascertainable average grade. Applications are submitted online through our application portal.
Trial study
Persons without a school-based university entrance qualification, but with a qualified job training and a professional activity can apply for a study program. In the restricted-admission programs, 1-2 trial students can be accepted per semester (depending on the admission capacity of the program). In the degree programs with open admission, there is no limit on places. In both cases, certain requirements must be met.
To apply, proof must be provided of
- completed job training with at least satisfactory results and
- professional activity (e.g. an employer's reference without evaluation and with exact field of activity and period of employment) of at least three years in the learned profession (training periods do not count) or corresponding substitute periods* and
- a professional relationship between the training, the job held and the chosen course of study.
The application is made online via our application portal. There, please select "71 - qualified (FHR)" in the selection for "Type of university entrance qualification". For the "Date of university entrance qualification" enter the end of the 3-year professional activity.
In the case of a limited enrollment, the instructions for the trial study must be observed and signed and uploaded at the online enrollment.
A limited admission is not possible if the applicant has already been enrolled for a limited period of time in the respective study program at another university in the state of Schleswig-Holstein.
If you are applying for a trial study program in an open-admission program, we recommend that you have us perform a preliminary check of your application documents prior to online enrollment. Inform us after the online application about studieninfo@th-luebeck.de (please do not carry out the online enrollment yet!).
In admission-restricted courses of study, the check is carried out as part of the activation for the selection procedure. Here, no pre-check is required.
*The following are to be taken into account as substitute periods of employment of up to three years- compulsory service in the armed forces, in the Federal Border Guard, in a civil defense unit or in alternative service, or
an equivalent period of temporary service,- an activity in development aid in accordance with the Development Aid Workers Act,
- the voluntary social year according to the law for the promotion of a voluntary social year or the voluntary ecological year
according to the law for the promotion of a voluntary ecological year,- the independent management of a family household with at least three persons or with at least one person in need of education or
person in need of care.University aptitude test
Proof of qualification for university studies can be provided by persons without a school-based university entrance qualification with particularly high qualifications in vocational training, professional activity or further education. The State Ordinance on the University Qualification Examination for the Acquisition of a Subject-Related University Entrance Qualification for Vocationally Qualified Applicants (University Qualification Examination Ordinance) applies.
Admission requirements for the university entrance examination are:- Completion of at least two years of job training in a field related to the intended course of study, which is recognized under federal or state law; and
- Proof of at least three years of professional activity (after completion of the training) in a field related to the course of study and the professional training, with at least half of the regular working hours, which must be evidenced by a certificate of employment.
- Proof of qualified study counseling by the study program supervisor (must be applied for in the relevant departmental secretariat).
The university aptitude test is an individual oral examination. It consists of a general and a subject-specific section and lasts one hour. The general section is based on social, economic or cultural topics, including skills and knowledge in mathematics, a natural science and a foreign language. The subject matter of the specialized part of the examination is essential requirements of the intended course of study. The admission procedure and the examination are carried out by the university at which the studies are to be taken up. Application deadlines for admission to the qualifying examination at the Lübeck University of Applied Sciences are 15.04. for applications for the following winter semester and 15.10. for applications for the following summer semester.
The examination is subject to a fee (141 Euro).
Successful completion of the examination also entitles the candidate to apply for admission to admission-restricted courses of study.
The application is not made online via our website, but in writing with the application for admission to the university aptitude test. After passing the university entrance examination, you will receive a certificate and can apply via our application portal.
If you have any questions, please send an e-mail to studieninfo(at)th-luebeck.de
- Hardship help and compensation for disadvantages
You have the possibility under certain circumstances to improve your chances of admission by submitting a special application. The following special applications are possible and are briefly explained below:
- Hardship application
- Application for disadvantage compensation: Improvement of the average grade
- Application for disadvantage compensation: Improvement of the waiting period
The procedures serve to take into account the individual characteristics of the case under certain, narrowly defined conditions (§ 30 HZVO). The following applies to all special applications:
Special applications are examined according to strict standards and are only granted in rare cases.
Many applicants place too much hope in special applications. Not every reason that you consider relevant can be recognized as a "special case" in the allocation of study places. Read each description of the standards carefully and critically examine whether your case meets that standard.
Special requests must be carefully justified and supported by appropriate evidence
If you want to submit a special request, you must include appropriate evidence. You can find out what evidence this must be in the notes to the respective application. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
As a general rule, your "special case" must be presented clearly enough in the attached documents for an outside person to be able to understand the facts of the case on the basis of the documents.
The applications must be submitted on time with your online application.
Decision
In the case of a hardship application, you will first participate in the regular award process. If you receive a study place through this procedure, your hardship application will not be considered further. Only if you are unable to obtain a place through the regular allocation procedure will a decision be made on your hardship application. The result of this decision will be communicated to you in writing by email. You will receive a detailed explanation of the reasons upon written request.
In the case of a request for compensation for a disadvantage, a decision on your request will be made before the start of the awarding procedure. The result of this decision will be communicated to you in writing by email. You will receive a detailed explanation upon written request.
In the following you will find a short explanation of the special applications with the most important features, which do not claim to be complete. They are intended to help you decide whether an application is even possible for you and, if so, which application fits your case.
For more detailed information on the respective criteria and required proofs, please refer to the information sheet of the respective special application.
Hardship case
The hardship application is a request for immediate admission. The person wishes to be admitted in preference to all other applications.
There must be serious reasons for a person to be admitted immediately and before all others.
Such a circumstance applies to very few applications and has a chance of success only in rare cases.
A maximum of 2% of the places in a degree program are available for hardship cases. This usually corresponds to 1 - 2 places.
Example of hardship cases usually approved:
Person suffers from a serious illness/limitation with a tendency to worsen that requires immediate admission to the degree program. The severity of the illness and in particular the tendency to aggravation is comprehensibly documented by an understandably written expert medical opinion.
Note: Even an approved hardship case does not necessarily lead to admission as soon as there are more approved applications than places.
You can find detailed examples and information on the necessary evidence in the information sheet on hardship applications..
Disadvantage compensation
Application for disadvantage compensation: improvement of average grade
This is an application to improve the grade of the student's academic record (e.g., high school graduation grade). An improved average grade moves the person higher on the list of applications ranked by grade point average, improving the chance of admission above that quota.
There must be serious and demonstrable reasons that an individual's performance was impaired in obtaining a degree and that the individual was not responsible for this.
It must be demonstrable that and how this impairment in performance actually affected the average grade.
Example of usually approved requests for improvement in average grade:
Prolonged illness/death in the family has caused a dip in the performance curve. Person can demonstrate, for example, a grade point average of 2.5 prior to the event and deteriorates to a grade point average of 3.5 after the event. A school report confirms that the decline in performance is not the student's fault, but is largely due to circumstances. An assessment is given as to what grade the performance would have been without the adverse circumstances. This scholastic assessment may be taken into account.
You can find detailed examples and information on the necessary evidence in the information sheet on the application for disadvantage compensation - improvement of the average grade.
Application for disadvantage compensation: Improvement of the waiting period
This is an application for improvement of the waiting period. With more waiting time semesters, the person moves up the list of applications ranked by waiting time and thus improves the chance of admission above this quota.
The point is to demonstrate that the person was prevented from obtaining the university entrance qualification earlier due to circumstances beyond his or her control.
Example of usually granted requests for waiting period improvement:
Health circumstances, as well as family circumstances (e.g., caring for dependents in need of care) during high school have caused graduation to be delayed by one year. Two additional waiting semesters could then be credited.
You can find detailed examples and information on the necessary proof in the information sheet on the application for disadvantage compensation - improvement of the waiting period.
- Second degree
Second degree applicants are persons who have already completed a course of study at a German university (e.g. Bachelor's degree, Diplom, Staatsexamen, Magister examination or doctorate).
In consideration of those who do not yet have a degree, admission to a second degree program is restricted. A maximum of three percent of the study places are earmarked for second degree studies. The order is determined by a measurement number (see below).
A course of study is considered to have been completed when the prescribed state final examination (Staatsexamen) or academic final examination (e.g. Bachelor's degree, Diplom or Magister examination,) has been successfully passed. Applications for a master's degree program following a bachelor's degree program are NOT considered a second degree program unless the applicant already holds a master's, diploma, state examination, or master's degree (University Admission Ordinance § 33).
The following documents, which are indispensable for determining the measurement number, must be submitted with an application for a second degree in a degree program with restricted admission for the 1st semester. The following sections explain what these documents are and how they affect the calculation of the measurement number.
Proof of standard period of study and actual duration of study
Please provide evidence of the standard period of study of the first degree program and the actual duration of the first degree program. If there is no proof, no measurement number will be calculated.Measurement number determination:
Graduation within the standard period of study = 2 points
Graduation after the standard period of study + 1 semester = 2 points
Graduation after standard period of study + 2 semesters = 1.5 points
Graduation after standard period of study + 3 semesters = 1 point
Graduation after standard period of study + 4 semesters = 0.5 points
Graduation after standard period of study + 5 semesters and more = 0 points
Standard period of study and duration of studies not proven = 0 points
Final grade of the first degree
The grade with which the first degree program was completed must be evidenced on the final transcript. If the degree certificate does not contain a final grade, this can be proven alternatively by means of a certificate from the office responsible for issuing the degree certificate. In the absence of a final grade, no measurement number can be determined.Measurement number determination:
Final grade first degree excellent / very good = 2 points.
Final grade first degree good / fully satisfactory = 1.5 points
Final grade first degree satisfactory = 1 point
Final grade first degree sufficient = 0.5 points
No proven final grade = 0 points
Written justification of the second degree
On a separate sheet of paper (informal), please submit a detailed written justification of your desired second degree program. This should include information about previous education and professional activities as well as the desired career goal. The justification should include all aspects that are relevant to a second degree program.Measurement determination:
- Case group 1: Second degree for compelling professional reasons = 9 points.
A profession is sought which can only be pursued on the basis of two completed courses of study. The further studies are intended to enable the student to take up a profession which necessarily requires the successful completion of two courses of study
- Case group 2: Second study for scientific reasons = 7, 9, 11 points
The second degree is to be endorsed for scientific reasons. In view of a later occupation in science and research, a further scientific qualification in another course of study is sought on the basis of the previous scientific and practical activity.
- Case group 3: Second degree program due to special professional reasons = 7 points
The professional situation is significantly improved by the fact that the completion of the second degree program complements the first degree program in a meaningful way. It depends on which professional activity is aimed at and in which way both degrees support the professional practice. The concrete and individual career planning is decisive. It must be possible to establish an objective connection between the contents of the completed first degree and the intended second degree.
- Case group 4: Second degree program due to other professional reasons = 4 points
Although the further study does not represent a meaningful supplement to the first study, the professional situation is considerably improved by the second study for other reasons. A detailed individual statement is required.
- Case group 5: Other reasons than those mentioned above = 1 point
For example, re-entry after raising children or similar.
- Change of course of study or change of university (higher semester)
A change of university or a change of study program within the Lübeck University of Applied Sciences to a higher semester is only possible if you have completed enough credits for the new study program. (If this is not the case, you must apply for the first semester within the regular application period. Please note that you can only apply for the first semester of a restricted-admission program if you are not already enrolled in the same program at a university at the time of application).
Before applying, apply for a placement certificate from the examination board of the relevant department at Lübeck University of Applied Sciences. Please contact the relevant department directly with your transcript of records and certificate of study:
- Applied Natural Sciences at hans-juergen.grein(at)th-luebeck.de
- Civil Engineering at pruefungsausschuss-bauwesen(at)th-luebeck.de
- Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at andreas.hanemann(at)th-luebeck.de
- Mechanical Engineering and Economics at pruefungsausschuss-mw(at)th-luebeck.de
Exception: If you have previously studied the same course at another university of applied sciences, no placement certificate is necessary. In this case, you will automatically be placed in the current semester.
Please note: If an examination required by an examination regulation has been definitively failed in a course of study, further study in the same course of study at the same type of university is not possible according to the applicable regulations. If you have definitively failed a course of study at a university, you are allowed to continue your studies at the Lübeck University of Technology in the same course of study. However, if you have definitively failed a course of study at a university of applied sciences, you cannot continue your studies in the same course of study at Lübeck University of Technology.
For applicants who have acquired their university entrance qualification outside Germany, direct application is only possible if 90 ECTS at a German university as well as sufficient German language skills are proven. Otherwise, the application must be made via uni-assist. Further information on the application procedure via uni-assist and on the German language certificates recognized here can be found at the top of this page.
Application deadlines
for the summer semester: 01.11. - 28./29.02.
for the winter semester: 01.05. - 31.08.
Admissions to higher semesters can only be made on the basis of available places in the corresponding semester. If more applications are received than available places, the selection will be made according to the grade of the university entrance qualification.Applications are submitted online via our application portal.
- hochschulstart.de - Dialog-Oriented Service Procedure (DoSV) of the Foundation for University Admission
TH Lübeck participates with the following Bachelor programs in the Dialog-Oriented Service Procedure (DoSV) of the "Foundation for University Admission - hochschulstart.de":
- Civil Engineering
- Urban Planning (application only possible for the winter semester)
- Business Administration (application only possible for the winter semester)
- Industrial Engineering and Management (attendance course, application only possible for the winter semester)
This is a central procedure for the distribution of places for new students. The DoSV is used to coordinate the allocation of undergraduate degree programs with local admission restrictions at the federal level. The background to this is the current "multiple allocation" of study places by applicants who have applied to several universities. It is intended to ensure that these study places are distributed to applicants more quickly, effectively and in a more user-friendly manner. As an applicant, you have the advantage of having a central point of contact for all applications submitted in the DoSV - the platform www.hochschulstart.de - where you can view the status of all applications at any time.
Application deadlines at hochschulstart.de
- for the winter semester: 01.05. - 15.07.
- for the summer semester: 01.11. - 15.01.Who can apply via hochschulstart.de?
Application via hochschulstart.de for the Lübeck University of Technology is only possible for the 1st semester of the above-mentioned study programs. This also applies to second degree programs.
The registration via hochschulstart.de is obligatory for
- German applicants who have a German university entrance qualification,
- foreign applicants who have a German university entrance qualification,
- graduates of a German Studienkolleg.
The application via hochschulstart.de is not possible for German and foreign applicants who have a university entrance qualification acquired outside Germany. These applicants apply via uni-assist.
