  • Incoming - Welcome to THL!

    Information / Incoming

We want to provide our international students at TH Lübeck with an easy start. Therefore, we have compiled some important information that is necessary for a successful start at our university. If you have questions or are in need of help you will find the right contact here as well.

    Overview

    • Application Procedure

All applicants who have acquired their university entrance qualification outside the Federal Republic of Germany apply via uni-assist, the work and service center for international student applications. uni-assist checks your study qualification for the chosen degree program on behalf of Technische Hochschule Lübeck.

There are deviating regulations in the following cases:

Applicants who have an assessment test at a preparatory college, a certificate of equivalence with grade calculation about their education abroad from the Ministry of Education, or a European Baccalaureate certificate (Zeugnis der Europäischen Reifeprüfung) do not apply through uni-assist, but follow the normal application process for domestic prospective students.

There is another special regulation for the following Bachelor degree programs

      • Civil Engineering
      • Urban Planning
      • Business Administration
      • Industrial Engineering and Management

The following applies to these degree programs: Before you apply via the uni-assist portal, you must register on the website "hochschulstart.de". After registration, you will receive a two-part identification number consisting of BID (applicant ID) and BAN (applicant authentication number). With this BID and BAN you must then register in the uni-assist portal and complete your application there (further steps on the hochschulstart.de website are not necessary, the application must only be completed in the uni-assist portal).

    • uni-assist - Explained Step-by-Step

How does the application via uni-assist work?

      1. Register on the uni-assist application portal "my.uni-assist.de" (Attention: For some degree programs, registration on hochschulstart.de is also necessary in order to receive authenticated access data (BID and BAN). Currently, these are the following degree programs: Civil Engineering, Urban Planning, Business Administration and Industrial Engineering.)
      2. Create an online application for your desired degree program (the uni-assist application portal explains exactly what this entails)
      3. Upload the application and all necessary documents
      4. Pay the processing fees (only then will uni-assist process your application)

      What happens next?

      1. Uni-assist will check your application documents (processing time approx. 4 - 6 weeks)
      2. You will receive the check result via your uni-assist account under "My mailbox".
      3. If the result is positive, uni-assist will forward your application electronically to the TH Lübeck. The TH Lübeck makes the final decision on admission and we will then contact you (in the case of restricted-admission programs, approx. 4 weeks after the application deadline). If you are applying for a degree program with no admission restrictions, we will send you the admission documents by mail or e-mail approx. 2 to 3 weeks after electronic transmission by uni-assist).

      Attention

We cannot give any information in advance whether your educational certificate fulfills the admission requirements. On anabin, the information portal for the recognition of foreign educational qualifications, you can find out whether your certificate is in principle sufficient for studying in Germany. Financial Grants for Erasmus+ Students from Partner Countries

As part of the Erasmus+ program with partner countries, TH Lübeck has signed agreements with the following universities:

Kosovo: UBT - Higher Education Institution

Ukraine: Chernivtsi National University Yuriy Fedkovych, Kyiv National University of Construction and Architecture, Lviv Polytechnic National University und Poltava National Technical Yuri Kondratyuk University

Student, teachers and staff can apply for an Erasmus+ mobility at TH Lübeck and receive a financial grant. Interested students and staff contact their home universities to inform about the requirements, application and selection procedure.

The financial grant for students from a partner country to Germany is 850 € / month. Additionally, students receive a travel grant depending on the distance between place of origin and Lübeck. For Kosovo and the Ukraine, the amount is 275 Euro and 320 Euro for using a sustainable mode of transportation (Green Travel). Up to 4 days of additional funding to cover travel days for a return trip, if relevant, may be considered for Green Travel.

Incoming staff from the partner country to Germany may receive 160 Euro/ day until the 14. day and 112 Euro/ day from the 15th day on. In addition, incoming staff also receive a travel grant in the amount of 275 Euro or 320 Euro for Green Travel.

The Erasmus+ funding is administered by the TH Lübeck.

      Special grants

Inclusion and diversity - these are priorities of the Erasmus+ program generation 2021-27. With various measures and options, the program wants to archieve the goal of more equal opportunities and inclusion in all areas of education. An essential component in the higher education sector is the additional financial support for participants with fewer opportunities through financial top-ups and real cost support.

From the project 2022 on, students can benefit from a social top-up in the amount of 250 Euro/ month, if they....

      • have disabilities (min. degree of disability: 20).
      • have a chronic illness that will cause extra costs.
      • take part in the exchange and are accompanied by a child/children.
      • have to quit an employmnt in order to take part in the exchange. You must have been employed for at least 6 months.
      • are first-generation students.

Still haven't found all the answers to your questions? You can ask our colleagues in the International Office directly. Just write us an email at incomings(at)th-luebeck.de

  • Outgoing - going abroad

    Studying Abroad

Are you interested in studying abroad?

As a student at TH Lübeck, you have various opportunities to gain experience abroad during your studies. You can study for one or two semesters at a partner university and also write a project thesis or final paper during your semester abroad. As a rule, tuition fees are waived or financed by a scholarship.

    • Preliminary Considerations

There are numerous ways and possibilities to organize your studies abroad:

If you would like to spend only a few months in a nearby foreign country and the organizational effort should be kept within limits, then participation in a university exchange program within the framework of Erasmus+ is recommended for you.

Or do you want to take the chance and get to know one of our partner universities worldwide? Perhaps you have already chosen a foreign university that is not a partner university of the TH Lübeck and are ready to handle the planning and implementation on your own.

On these pages you will find information on different types of study abroad and information on financing the project abroad. In advance it should be underlined: The financing questions should in no case deter and nip the idea in the bud. Through numerous scholarship offers and other funding opportunities, a study period abroad can be affordable for everyone. A semester abroad also does not automatically mean that your study time will be extended beyond the standard period of study.

      Language skills

Remember to find out in good time about the language requirements for studying at the university of your choice, so that you have enough time to take any tests or attend language courses. At the TH Lübeck, language courses are offered by the Study Center. The courses offered are English, German as a foreign language, Spanish, Chinese and others. In some cases, you can take the subjects as elective modules as part of your degree program and receive credit points after successfully passing the exam.

Within the framework of the project Einstiege ins Studium, a cooperation between TH Lübeck and the University of Lübeck, TH students and employees can participate in free language courses. These courses are supplementary offers, i.e. no credit points can be awarded.

In English-speaking countries, the TOEFL test or the IELTS test is normally required for the application. You can take a preparation course for the TOEFL test at the study center.

      Plan early!

Find out early - 1.5 years before the planned stay - at information events at the university or visit the International Office, so that you do not miss any application deadline and have time to make decisions and be clear about the right time to study abroad.

    • Exchange Program ERASMUS+

Exchange programs within the framework of Erasmus+ offer a well-organized organizational framework for studying abroad due to uniform regulations throughout Europe, as

      • the International Office of the home university establishes contact with the host university,
      • the creditability of achievements acquired abroad is bindingly regulated prior to the stay abroad,
      • if you register in good time at the host university, a place in a hall of residence is often reserved,
      • most host universities offer an extensive support network
      • and and and.....

Within the framework of the Erasmus+ program, the TH Lübeck has partner universities in Europe where students can spend a semester abroad. The exchange modalities are defined in the "bilateral agreements" between TH Lübeck and the respective partner university. This means that at the international universities a different number of study places in different subjects are available for students of the TH Lübeck.

      Studying abroad with disabilities

Studying abroad is very challenging for students with disabilities. We would like to encourage you to inform yourself about the possibilities of studying abroad and will actively support you in the planning and implementation. Under the Erasmus+ program, additional or higher grants are available to students with disabilities (degree of disability of 50% or more) for study abroad.

      Studying abroad with a child

Studying with a child is a big challenge, so it is usually hard to think about a stay abroad. We would like to support students with children in planning and implementing a stay abroad. Within the framework of the Erasmus+ program, students who want to go abroad with a child are eligible for additional or higher grants for studying abroad.

    • Free Mover

Outside of partnerships with the university, you can of course also study for a semester or two on your own at the university of your choice in the country of your dreams. Most universities offer the opportunity to apply as a so-called "free mover". Many scholarship offers are also not tied to university partnerships.

Before you decide on a self-organized semester or year abroad, you should note the following:

      PROMOS

You can apply for the DAAD program PROMOS at the International Office of the TH Lübeck. In this program, stays abroad (study and internship) are funded under certain conditions with a travel allowance. The application deadline for the current year is February 15th.

      Tuition Fees

Many universities abroad "live" on tuition fees, and education in many countries is a market in which money should also be earned from foreign students. As a "free mover" you have to be prepared to pay high tuition fees. This applies above all to non-European/English-speaking countries.

      University check

Please check whether the university of your choice is state-recognized (accredited). In addition to international university rankings (e.g. Times Higher Education Ranking, THE), this is the only way to assess whether quality standards are being observed and checked and whether your semester abroad or your degree abroad will ultimately be recognized in Germany. Information on the recognition of universities is provided by the German Conference of Ministers of Education via the anabin database.
      Recognition of achievements acquired abroad

The examination board of your department is responsible for this. We recommend that you arrange a learning agreement with the examination board before your stay abroad, in which the courses at the host university are listed that you want to have recognized for your studies after your return.

      Search for a major

Research the courses offered at the university of your choice. In the Higher Education Compass you can search for international cooperations of German universities.
      Country information

Inform yourself well about the living conditions and culture in your country of choice. It is also important for you to have information about the academic life and learning of the respective country. Helpful country information can be found on the DAAD website.

      Intermediary organizations

When organizing a stay abroad at a non-partner university of the TH Lübeck, you can also go through an intermediary organization. Please inform yourself in advance about the services offered and possible additional fees. Largely free placement organizations that offer many additional services and useful information are: IEC Online (study), College Contact (study), GOstralia!-GOmerica! (study), Institut Ranke-Heinemann, College Council (study, internships, work & travel) and Asia Exchange.

    • International Internship

An internship abroad is also a good opportunity to get to know not only the language and culture of a country, but also its working world. There are various ways to organize and finance an internship abroad.

Support in finding internships and companies abroad as well as tips and information on your application can be obtained from Career Development at TH Lübeck. Please also note the wide range of free workshops offered by Career Development.

Further information about internships abroad - tips on how to find an internship, links to trustworthy placement agencies, country information and much more. - can be obtained from the DAAD.

    Scholarships / Stipends

A stay abroad doesn't have to fails due to a lack of financing. For students and employees of TH Lübeck there are various funding opportunities for a stay abroad.

    • Overview

The International Office awards mobility grants within the framework of Erasmus+ for study stays at our partner universities and internships in Europe. Through the DAAD's PROMOS program, travel grants are awarded to students of Lübeck University of Technology. The student association IAESTE arranges paid internships worldwide. In addition, you can apply for university-owned programs.

Furthermore, there are numerous scholarship programs offered by the DAAD, various foundations and organizations. We have compiled an overview of the most important funding opportunities for you below.

Funding opportunities at the TH Lübeck

You can take advantage of the following funding opportunities through the Lübeck University of Technology:

      • Participation in the Erasmus+ program of the European Union
      • Travel grants within the framework of the PROMOS program
      • Shanghai scholarship (China)
      • Paid internships abroad through IAESTE LC Lübeck
      • MSOE Double Degree Program (USA)
      • Tuition fee waiver within international partnerships

      Subject- and country-specific funding opportunities

Depending on the subject and country, additional funding opportunities are available:

      • Scholarship database of the DAAD
      • Foundation index of the Association of German Foundations
      • Scholarship platform mystipendium.de
      • Fulbright Commission for stays in the USA

      DAAD: HAW.International

The DAAD supports students at universities of applied sciences during their stays abroad with the HAW.International program. Students in Bachelor's and Master's programs receive scholarships for a stay abroad as part of their studies, internship or thesis. The duration of the grant varies according to the type of stay. The scholarship includes the following benefits:

      • a monthly scholarship installment, which is determined according to the host country,
      • a travel allowance, the amount of which varies according to the host country,
      • health, accident and personal liability insurance benefits,
      • for study visits: Subsidy for tuition fees, if any, up to an upper limit (depending on the destination country),
      • for theses: Subsidy for travel in the host country directly related to the project.

In addition, family benefits for accompanying spouses or partners and children can be granted upon application under certain conditions. Simultaneous funding via Erasmus+ or PROMOS and HAW.International is excluded.

Further information on the program is available online:  HAW.International: Semester Stays and Theses and HAW.International: Internships Abroad

      International BAföG

For study and internship stays, benefits can be applied for according to the BAföG-Auslandszuschlagsverordnung:

      • Monthly foreign supplement for education outside the EU/Switzerland.
      • Verifiable tuition fees (up to 4,600 euros per academic year)
      • Subsidy for travel expenses
      • Subsidy for health insurance.

The payments according to the BAföG-Auslandszuschlagsverordnung are in principle made as a grant (repayment-free) and as an additional semester to the domestic BAföG.

Note: The subsidy rates for BAföG abroad may mean that someone who is not eligible in Germany due to the level of their parents' income can still receive a subsidy. Therefore, we generally recommend that you submit an application and obtain information.

Important: Applications for funding abroad should be submitted at least six months before the start of the planned stay abroad.

      Education loan

Another way to secure funding for a stay abroad is through education and student loans. These mostly low-interest loans offer targeted financial support and can often be flexibly adjusted.

In contrast to BAföG, the federal government's education loan program is independent of the student's own income and assets as well as those of his or her parents or spouse or partner, and can also be obtained in addition to BAföG.

    • ERASMUS+

Erasmus+ Funding covers the following benefits:

      • Academic recognition of study achievements abroad,
      • Tuition waiver at the Erasmus partner university (mobility for studies) or

      Financial Top-ups

Erasmus+ participants can receive one of the following financial top-ups when meeting the criteria. Participants receive the top-up amount to the individual support of the EU Erasmus+ grant. Participants eligible for a social top-up are also entitled to receive the top-up amount for internships and the top-up amount for Green Travel. If a participant meets the criteria for more than one social top-up (e.g. first generation student and working student), only one social top-up can be granted. Participants with a disability, a chronic illness or accompanying children can apply for a monthly top-up or a contribution based on real costs. The application for a contribution on real costs has to be submitted to the DAAD at least 3 months before the start of the mobility period. To receive the financial top-up, participants have to sign a Declaration of Honour and submit the supporting documents to the International Office.

      1. Top-up for Green Travel

Participants can opt for a green travel top-up when they will travel to their partner university using a sustainable mode of transportation. The DAAD classifies the train, carpooling, the bus, cycling and walking as sustainable transportation methods. Participants are asked to use green travel methods for at least 50% of the travel distance. Eligible participants receive a single contribution of 50 EUR as a top-up amount to the Erasmus grant and up to 4 days of additional funding to cover travel days for a return trip, if relevant. To receive the top-up: Save all tickets/ proof of travel for at least 5 years.

      2. Social top-up for first generation students

Participants whose parents have not acquired an academic degree at a university or a university of applied sciences are eligible for this top-up. A degree from a university of cooperative education (Berufsakademie) leading to a qualification comparable to a university degree is to be treated as an academic degree. A master craftsman's diploma (Meisterbrief) is not to be equated with an academic degree in this context. University courses completed abroad that are not recognized as such in Germany (e.g. physiotherapy) are considered as an academic degree in this context. For participants with a single parent, this regulation only applies to the single parent. Eligible participants will receive a top-up amount to the Erasmus+ grant with an amount of 250 EUR per month. To receive the top-up: Submit a declaration signed by your parents that they have not acquired an academic degree.

      3. Social top-up for working students

Participants who have been employed for at least 6 months before the start of their studies abroad and who are unable to continue their employment during their stay abroad are entitled to apply for this top-up. The employment must have been subject to social insurance contributions and the monthly net income must be between 450 and 850 Euro (sum of all monthly incoming). Students who are self-employed and/or studying in a dual/part-time programme are not eligible. Eligible participants will receive a top-up amount to the Erasmus+ grant with an amount of 250 EUR per month. To receive the top-up: Submit a proof of employment, e.g. employment contract, payslips, employer's certificate.

      4. Social top-up for students with accompanying child(ren)

Participants who will be accompanied by their child/children can apply. This also applies to couples. However, double funding of a child is excluded. Eligible participants will receive a top-up amount to the Erasmus+ grant with an amount of 250 EUR per month. To receive the top-up: Submit a proof of parenthood (e.g. birth certificate, parental allowances) and travel documents for the child(ren)

      5. Social Top-Up for students with a disability or a chronic illness that will cause extra costs

Participants with a min Grad der Behinderung (GdB) of 20 or a chronic illness that will cause extra costs while studying abroad can apply. Eligible participants will receive a top-up amount to the Erasmus+ grant with an amount of 250 EUR per month. To receive the top-up: Submit a proof of disability (Behindertenausweis) or a medical statement confirming that there is an additional financial need abroad due to the chronic illness.

  • Bachelor

    Bachelor programs

TH Lübeck is a university of applied sciences (UAS). What's special about this form of university is: UAS-professors invest a larger part of their working time in teaching than at a conventional university. The focus is therefore on the education of students, including personal supervision and intensive practical phases.

Another central component of UAS is the cooperation with regional and international companies to ensure the most practical training possible and the transfer of research results. The degrees are fully equivalent - a bachelor's degree from an UAS can therefore also be used to study for a master's degree at a university, provided all other requirements are met.

    International Study Programs

Technische Hochschule Lübeck (THL) has a number of international study programs, which have been successfully running for many years. THL offers three English-language master programs and six double degree programs cooperating with two Chinese and one American university to various groups of students.

  • Master

    Master Programs

With a master's degree, the knowledge gained from the bachelor's program can be further deepened and career opportunities increased. Master's degrees at universities and universities of applied sciences are fully equivalent - those who successfully complete the Master's program are thus entitled to a doctorate.

At the TH Lübeck there are four Master's programs that can be completed entirely in English. For more information please click on the tab.

    • Mechanical Engineering

The three-semester master's program in Mechanical Engineering builds on a seven-semester bachelor's program in mechanical engineering. A special feature is the consistent international orientation. The language of instruction is English throughout. The program can be completed in semesters at foreign partner universities (International Design Engineer).

European applicants with a 6-semester Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering can also apply for conditional admission. For this, an average grade of at least 1.8 or better must have been achieved. European applicants can already apply with a current performance record of at least 180 ECTS (in the case of a study program with 210 ECTS), provided that they will complete their degree before starting the Master's program at the TH Lübeck.
