Did You Know? There are more than 400 higher education institutions in Germany, including over 100 universities and more than 200 Universities of Applied Sciences (HAWs formerly known as Fachhochschulen). Bachelor’s and master’s degrees are equivalent across all types of institutions. Nearly 40 percent of students are currently enrolled at a HAW, and the number is rising. As student numbers grow, so does the need for professors: every year, around 1,200 new professorships need to be filled at HAWs in Germany.
From practice to the university
A HAW Professorship Offers the Best of Three Worlds
Universities of Applied Sciences (HAWs), such as Technische Hochschule Lübeck, are different yet equal in standing. Their focus is on practice-oriented teaching, application-oriented research, and the transfer of knowledge between university and society. At the interface of industry, academia, and the public, HAWs are the practically oriented sisters of research universities, which tend to concentrate on theoretical basic research.
This makes HAWs attractive employers for professionals from industry, public administration, and business who are looking for a new professional challenge. You can apply directly from practice for an open professorship at TH Lübeck. In addition to a passion for research and teaching, substantial professional experience is an essential prerequisite for a professorship. The combination of experience and curiosity enables a vibrant exchange on relevant topics of the present and future.

Collaboration with regional companies and organizations plays a major role: many theses and project works are conducted with external partners.
