Welcome Weeks

Dear Incoming Student,

Welcome to TH Lübeck! We have prepared a Welcome Program with information sessions, social activities, and opportunities to meet other students. During the Welcome Weeks, you will receive all the important information you need for your studies at Technische Hochschule Lübeck and get to know your new university and fellow students.

Tutors from the Intercultural Hub will accompany many of the Welcome Weeks activities. They will support you throughout the program and help you connect with current students and gain practical insights into student life at TH Lübeck.

Below you will find more details about the program. We invite you to become part of the international community at TH Lübeck and look forward to meeting you soon!

Please note the following: Photos and videos will be recorded during the Welcome Weeks. Technische Hochschule Lübeck uses these photos for its websites, social media presences and makes the photos available to all Welcome Weeks participants.

Welcome Weeks March 10 - 21, 2026

The weekly schedule shows you when and where the events take place. Please click on the schedule on the right to take a close look. Individual events are marked with special notes. For example, you are asked to bring a laptop to the “Academic Aspects” workshop. All events are mandatory for every new international student at THL. If you are unable to attend (e.g., due to a delayed arrival), please inform us in good time so that we can plan accordingly.

More information on various topics

Here you will find more information on various topics such as descriptions, further links...

  • Come Together

In the morning, there will be a short welcome meeting with all contact persons. During this meeting, we will go over the upcoming schedule, and you will meet your German language teachers.

The first German lesson will start immediately afterward. At lunchtime, the intercultural tutors will meet you and accompany you to your first visit to the cafeteria. If you do not yet have a campus card, you will be able to obtain one at that time. Please remember to bring twenty euros in cash with you.

  • German Classes

During the Welcome Weeks, you will take part in German lessons and enjoy a fun and engaging introduction to campus life at TH Lübeck. We offer three groups: one for beginners with no prior knowledge, one for beginners with some prior knowledge, and one for advanced learners.

To help us plan the German lessons, please let us know your language level by sending an e-mail to sprachenzentrum(at)th-luebeck.de. If you are unsure about your level, you can consult the CEFR global scale for guidance. If you have no knowledge of German at all, please let us know as well.

During the Welcome Weeks, you will also have the opportunity to register for a semester-long German course before general registration opens, which helps ensure that places are still available. If you wish, your German teacher can also provide an individual course recommendation.

  • Introductory Lecture 1: Introduction to Student Life

What sports activities are available to students at TH Lübeck? How do I use public transport, and what are the advantages of the semester ticket? Where can I get lunch? How can I connect with student committees, and what is ESN? What should I do in case of a medical emergency, accident, or illness?

These and many other questions will be answered during this session. We will cover all the key topics related to student life at TH Lübeck.

  • Introductory Lecture 2: Academic Aspects

During this session, you will get to know the university’s main apps (for example QIS, Moodle, and Webmail). You will also learn about the organizational structure at TH Lübeck, how to find lecture and examination schedules, how to register for exams, how to access your grades, and much more. All of this information is essential for your stay at TH Lübeck, so please do not miss this session.

To help you put this knowledge into practice, a hands-on exercise will take place after the presentation. Senior students will be there to guide and support you. Please make sure to bring your laptop.

  • Bowling Night

Strikes, spares, and good vibes! Join us for a bowling night at Bowling World Lübeck, just a short distance from the city centre, and get to know other students in a fun and informal setting.

    Registration required!

  • Guided City Tour Lübeck and Billiards

Discover Lübeck on a guided city tour. Together with your fellow students, you will explore Lübeck’s famous landmarks, the medieval alleyways and courtyards, the waterways surrounding the old town, and much more. Along the way, you will learn many interesting facts and, hopefully, have a great time together.

We will meet at the Holstentor. Please wear comfortable shoes and bring a raincoat if necessary. The tour will be accompanied by senior students.

Directly after the tour we will meet at the Billard Sport Casino, which has been rented exclusively for participants of the Welcome Weeks. Enjoy a fun afternoon together! Please note that food and drinks must be paid for individually, and bringing your own food or drinks is not permitted.

  • Study Program and Profile Info

Who’s who in the department? Where can you take care of different administrative matters? Where do you need to be during the first week of lectures? Where can you receive individual advice and support? These questions and many more will be answered during the department meeting.

You will receive an academic overview of your department and its offices, learn more about course participation and exam registration, and find out how courses and lectures are organized. We will also show you where to find module descriptions and course passwords. In addition, we will help you organize your timetable based on your Learning Agreement. Of course, there will be time for questions and individual recommendations. After this meeting, you will be well prepared to start your lectures and coursework.

Exchange students, please remember to bring your Learning Agreement to the meeting!

  • Workshop 1: Intercultural Awareness

This workshop is designed to help you improve your communication skills and develop your intercultural competence. These skills will be useful both in your daily life in a new cultural environment and in your studies at university. The basics of intercultural communication that you will learn will also be valuable for your future professional career.

The workshop explores and compares different cultures, showing that there are many similarities despite culturally influenced differences in thinking and behavior. Through film clips, practical exercises, and role plays, you will become more aware of these dynamics and learn how to handle sensitive situations and potential misunderstandings more confidently.

Thanks to the diversity of participants from countries around the world, you will also experience intercultural communication first hand.

The intercultural training sessions usually last one day and are led by qualified internal and external trainers. Each trainer has many years of professional experience in this field and has personal experience of living and working in different cultural environments.

    Coaches:  Nicola Graessner, Evans Gumbe

  • Workshop 2: Communication at THL

Communication is the foundation of everyday life, teamwork, and international networking. The way we communicate is shaped by many factors, including our family and educational background, peer groups, regional and social environments, as well as national norms and frameworks.

In this introductory lecture, we will explore how communication works in everyday life at a German university and which norms and conditions influence international communication and teamwork. We will also reflect on our own cultural perspectives and compare different communication styles.

    Coach: Evans Gumbe

  • Guided City Tour Hamburg

Hamburg, the gateway to the world. Together you will explore one of Germany’s most exciting cities on a guided tour through the city centre. Along the way, you will see major landmarks, learn about the history of the Hanseatic city, and gain insights into life in one of Europe’s largest port cities.

After the city tour, there will be a harbour cruise. From the water, you will experience the Port of Hamburg from a different perspective and see highlights such as the Speicherstadt, the Elbphilharmonie and the large container terminals. The cruise is also a great opportunity to relax, enjoy the atmosphere of the city, and get to know other students.

    Registration required!
