Double Degree Programme
Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE), USA
Since 1994, we have maintained a very special partnership with the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE) that is unique in Schleswig-Holstein: a German–American double degree program.
Within this partnership, three degree programs offer international study tracks. Students who choose this option attend a large portion of their courses in English alongside American students beginning in their fourth semester. From the seventh semester onward, participants transfer to the MSOE campus as a cohort, continue their studies there, and complete their bachelor’s thesis. Upon successful completion, students are awarded a German–American double degree.
Further information about this program can be found under Outgoing - Study abroad.
Degree programs participating in the double degree program:
- Bachelor of Electrical Engineering
- Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering
- Bachelor of Business Administration and Engineering
In addition, for several semesters now, bachelor’s students in civil engineering, business administration, biomedical engineering, and computer science/software engineering have had the opportunity to spend a semester at MSOE as exchange students. Information on exchange opportunities and application procedures is available from the respective departments.
International Studies in Electrical Engineering (ISE)
The International Studies in Electrical Engineering (ISE) is the German-American Double Degree Program offered by TH Lübeck in cooperation with the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE), Wisconsin, USA. The goal is a dual degree from both universities — without extending the standard eight-semester study period. Starting in the 5th semester, you study alongside MSOE students — in English, with no tuition fees.
At the core of the ISE is a one-year stay abroad in Milwaukee: In your fourth year of study, you complete a project-based degree course. In the fifth and sixth semesters, you study together with your fellow American students — first in English-language courses in Lübeck, then in the seventh and eighth semesters entirely in the United States. Applications are submitted in the third semester through a selection process.

International Studies in Mechanical Engineering (ISM)
The International Studies in Mechanical Engineering (ISM) at TH Lübeck is a German-American Double Degree Program in cooperation with the Milwaukee School of Engineering (MSOE), Wisconsin, USA. Within 8 semesters, you earn two internationally recognized degrees: the B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering (Germany) and the B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering (USA) — without extending the standard study period.
At the core of the ISM is a one-year stay abroad in Milwaukee: In your fourth year of study, you complete a project-based degree course. In the fifth and sixth semesters, you study together with your fellow American students — first in English-language courses in Lübeck, then in the seventh and eighth semesters entirely in the United States. Costs
Living expenses and flights are to be covered by the participants themselves. German students are exempt from tuition fees in the United States!
Although no tuition fees are charged to TH Lübeck students, financial reserves should be available for the stay in the United States. For the entry visa, proof of €10,000 in the form of a bank statement is required.
Accommodation is in private apartments. Sharing an apartment with several fellow participants is a cost-effective option.
Monthly costs for rent and living expenses are approximately $1,100 and vary, as at home, depending on personal needs.
Round-trip airfare from Hamburg to Milwaukee is approximately $800.
Since studies at MSOE rely heavily on the use of textbooks, a budget of approximately $500 should be factored in for the study period in Milwaukee.
Financial support may be available through overseas BAföG (German federal student aid for studies abroad). In addition, there is the possibility of applying for a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) or a foundation.
East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST), China
Together with East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST) in Shanghai, a partner university since 1989, Technische Hochschule Lübeck offers two integrated English-language degree programs in “Environmental Engineering” and “Information Technology” (until 2026). Each year in winter semester, a maximum of 40 Chinese students can enroll in this study program at ECUST. The first five semesters of the program take place at ECUST (languages of instruction: Mandarin, English). In the summer semester, the studies continue at Technische Hochschule Lübeck in the sixth semester and concludes with a German-Chinese double degree (bachelor's) in the eighth semester. By 2025, more than 1,000 students had successfully graduated from this program.

Zhejiang University of Science and Technology (ZUST), China
Since 2011, Technische Hochschule Lübeck has been collaborating with Zhejiang University of Science and Technology (ZUST) in Hangzhou, China. Since 2014, the civil engineering program has been offered in Chinese and German. Every year in the winter semester, Chinese students enrol in this program at ZUST. The first five semesters are taught at ZUST in Mandarin and German. After five semesters, students continue their studies at Technische Hochschule Lübeck. The program concludes with a Sino-German double degree (bachelor's) in the eighth semester.
