Your path to TH Lübeck - Step by step
You have decided to study at TH Lübeck! You found a suitable degree program, arranged your financing — for example, through Erasmus+ — applied, and were accepted. Congratulations on your decision!
Now, it's time to plan your arrival and your stay in Lübeck. Some things, especially finding housing, can take a while, so you should address the following issues well in advance:
- Step 1: Check your entry regulations for Germany
The entry and residence requirements depend on nationality.
EU citizens can stay in Germany for an unlimited period of time without a visa and take up studies. Only a registration of the German address at the Residents' Registration Office is obligatory.
VISA:
Non-EU citizens must apply for a visa for study purposes at the German embassy in their home country before entering Germany. As an international student you will need a student visa and proof of sufficient funds for your stay in Germany. Please note that the visa process can take several months to complete. We therefore recommend booking a visa appointment in good time. You can usually make an appointment even before receiving your admission letter. However, you will definitely need your admission letter at the appointment. You can learn about specific documents required for your visa application, the required level of financial proof at the websites of the Federal Foreign Office.
Nationals of Australia, Canada, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, the Republic of Korea, the United Kingdom and the USA do not need a visa to enter Germany, but will have to apply for a residence permit at the local German foreigners office for stays over 90 days.
Non-EU citizens who already hold a residence title for study purposes issued by another EU Member State and plan to study at TH Lübeck for an Erasmus+ exchange semester, do not need to obtain a German residence title. The residence title issued by the other EU Member State entitles you to come to Germany and study here, and needs to be valid for the entire duration of your stay in Germany. TH Lübeck will inform the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees accordingly. Information about this procedure is sent to you by the TH Lübeck Erasmus+ Coordinator.
- Step 2: Look for accommodation
The Studentenwerk Schleswig-Holstein runs four dormitories in Lübeck. Students should apply for a room early on the Studentenwerk website. Unfortunately, there are not enough rooms available for all applicants. The Studentenwerk has also compiled an overiew with Information about finding a room (en) and addresses for the first nights in Lübeck. We kindly ask you to start looking for accommodation on your own and as soon as possible.
Check with your landlord to see if you need to arrange for utilities like electricity, gas, and Wi-Fi yourself.
Once you have found a room, ask your landlord to complete a confirmation of residence.
- Step 3: Welcome Weeks
We welcome new students with an introductory program consisting of interesting informational events, social activities, and networking opportunities. Don't miss out on this offer, which includes digital platforms, dates and deadlines, contact persons, and introductory courses! Take the first-semester weeks into account when planning your arrival.
Information and dates under Welcome Weeks.
- Step 4: Arrival
The city of Lübeck and the TH Lübeck are easily accessible by public transport. From Hamburg Airport, the journey by S-Bahn and regional express takes about 80 minutes. For route planning we recommend NAH.SH.
In Lübeck, bus lines 1, 9 and 32 run from Lübeck main station/ZOB to the TH Lübeck (bus stop: "Technische Hochschule"). More information and the campus map is provided on the main university website. - Step 5: Take out health insurance
All students must present sufficient German health insurance coverage for enrollment. Students under 30 years of age can choose between a statutory and a private health insurance, students over 30 years of age usually have to insure themselves in a private health insurance. Travel health insurance for the journey and the period until enrollment is recommended.
The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is accepted as sufficient proof of health insurance for EU students. Students from Turkey have to bring the AT-11 certificate.
Please request the digital M10 notification from your German health insurance provider. Our sender number is H0001038 in case your provider requires it. Your health insurance provider will send the notification directly to the university. However, you must request it from your insurance provider! Based on experience, transmission takes 2-3 business days.
Note: During Welcome Weeks, an appointment will be offered to take out health insurance.
- Step 6: Enrolment
Once your application has been reviewed and accepted, you will receive an Email notifying you that the status of your application has changed. Please log in to the CAMS student portal and start the online enrolment process. You will need to upload:
- A clear photo of your face against a plain background (jpg).
- A copy of your valid ID card or passport (jpg or pdf).
After completing this step, your invoice for the semester contribution will be generated. Paying the semester contribution and submitting the M10 certificate from a German health insurance provider will complete the enrollment process.
Once you have successfully enrolled, you can download the TH Lübeck IT account sheet from the application portal. This IT account sheet contains your matriculation number, your TH Lübeck email address and an initial password. To activate your TH Lübeck account, log into the CAMS student portal using your matriculation number as the username and the initial password. Change the password and you are ready to go! From this moment on, you can log in to all TH Lübeck IT services with your matriculation number and password.
- Step 7: Student ID & Semesterticket
After enrolling, you will receive your student ID card and you can download the Semesterticket.
The student ID card must be presented at exams. The student ID card entitles you to use the university library, purchase the Campus Card (canteen), use the university sports facilities, and much more. It also entitles you to discounts on admission to museums, swimming pools, etc.
To download the Deutschland-Semesterticket from the NAH.SH, please follow the steps described on the NAH.SH website. The Deutschland-Semesterticket:
- it is valid for journeys with public short distance transport (train and bus) in 2nd class – throughout Germany with all participating transport companies
- personal ticket, non-transferable, only valid in conjunction with an official photo ID-card
- up to three children under the age of 6 travel on the Semesterticket free of charge
- Taking a dog as well as taking a bicycle is not included in the Deutschlandticket.
The Semesterticket is always valid for one semester. It must be reordered each semester because the student status must be checked each semester.
- Step 8: Registering in the city of Lübeck – Einwohnermeldeamt / Ausländerbehörde
All students must register at the Residents' Registration Office (Einwohnermeldeamt) responsible for their place of residence within 2 weeks of moving in. For this purpose, the identity card and the “Wohnungsgeberbescheinigung” (housing provider certificate) are required. For the city of Lübeck, appointments can only be booked online.
Address: Bürgerservicebüro Innenstadt, Königstraße 49-57 (Lichthof), 23552 LübeckNote: An appointment at the Residents' Registration Office will be offered during Welcome Weeks.
- Step 9: Residence permit/ extend your visa
Non-EU students have to extend their student visa or change it into a residence permit. Before your first visa expires, the Lübeck Immigration Office will send you an appointment.
Address: Lübeck Immigration Office, Königstraße 49 - 57 (Lichthof), 23552 LübeckDocuments to bring:
- Passport with visa
- A digital biometric photo (These can be taken directly on site at the immigation office. Alternatively, the picture can be taken at a photo studio or another provider and then sent to the authorities via a secure connection.)
- Certificate of enrollment from the TH Lübeck and, if applicable, proof of previous study history
- Proof of health insurance
- Proof of sufficient financial means to cover living expenses (according to BAFöG maximum rate)
- Administrative fee
Note: An appointment with the immigration office will be offered during Welcome Weeks.
- Step 10: Open a bank account
For students from non-EU countries it is recommended to open an account at a German bank right at the beginning of their stay in Germany. This facilitates monthly payments for rent, electricity, internet and avoids unnecessary costs for international bank transfers.
The following documents must be presented to open an account:- identity card/passport with visa
- confirmation of registration with local address
- tax number
- student ID card or proof of admission to studies
Students should ensure that there is always enough money in the account to cover running costs.
- Liability insurance
Private liability insurance to cover damage caused to third parties is not required by law, but is nevertheless very important! TH Lübeck does not offer liability insurance coverage for students and cannot be held liable for any damage claims made against students. Students must make their own efforts to obtain sufficient insurance coverage.
