Are you interested in research or considering an academic career? The Master's program in Environmental Management at the Technische Hochschule Lübeck is an excellent fit for you.
Throughout the program, several modules specifically focus on working with and on research questions. In particular, the Competence Projects stand out. In these projects, you will collaborate with students from other disciplines (such as Physics and Chemistry) to tackle complex problems. Only by combining your subject-specific knowledge and unique skills can you achieve optimal results—just as in real research practice.
Additionally, you can take the elective module Applied Research (Link auf pdf der Modulbeschreibung Applied Research). During one semester, you will be actively involved in concrete research projects led by our professors for approximately two days per week, earning up to 12 ECTS credits*. The module works as follows: you will identify a supervising professor, and together you will define the project tasks, individual learning objectives, and milestones in a Learning Agreement. This agreement must be approved by the program director. At the end of the module, you will submit a project report and a learning diary. This ensures that you acquire essential research competencies, reflect on your learning process consciously, and contribute positively to the research projects.
Note: This module is ⚠️not mandatory for graduation. However, it provides valuable key competencies for academic research and is highly recommended for those considering further academic pursuits.
At the end of your studies, you will complete your Master's thesis—a scholarly work in which you apply and further develop the knowledge and skills acquired during your program. Your thesis can be conducted within a research project at the Technische Hochschule Lübeck, at a company, government agency, or NGO. Through your thesis, you will thus contribute to research and knowledge transfer into industry and society. Throughout the entire thesis phase, our professors are available to support and advise you. Because at our university, the acquisition of research competencies is guided by our core principle: excellent teaching is our foundation.
Upon completion of the program, you will be qualified to pursuea doctoral degree (PhD).
*This credit transfer occurs outside the standard study program. If you are enrolled in the 4-semester program, the credits can be applied toward the required 30 ECTS of electives. If you are in the 3-semester program, the credits are additional to the regular curriculum but will appear on your official degree certificate in any case.
